The Velvet Siren Original Painting
The title is "The Velvet Siren." 24" wide x 18" high, on stretched canvas.
Myths and legends always intrigue me, and various myths involving orcas and human interactions inspired this. The main myth that guided me to create this image of a orca siren or orca mermaid (however you wish to think of it) is a twist on a myth from the indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest. It is a story of a woman being taken by orcas and turned into one, but still being part human. Strangely, I went that direction after reading some other myths which are from New Zealand and are similar. It's probably because I am from the Pacific Northwest.
Enough of my why... It's for you after-all.
The Concept: It blends human beauty with the elegance of an orca. The Palette: A dramatic, high-contrast palette sets a striking white visage and vibrant crimson lips against a deep, textured midnight-blue sea. Overall, we have an ethereal underwater scene. The Style: High contrast, expressive pop surrealism.
