This artwork carries a heavy psychedelic surrealism theme. By depicting mushrooms growing out of the mouth alongside a roaring breath of heat with a feeling of fire, the artwork visually articulates the intense, transformative power of an altered state of mind treating the vocalization or experience of the trip as something profoundly raw, explosive, and impossible to contain.
Sprouting directly from the dark, cavernous interior of the open mouth are three distinct psilocybin mushrooms. One blends with, and is in a way, the upper lip. Their stems are thick, fiber-textured, and shaded in dark greys, while their broad caps are painted in a deep magenta-pink with subtle white spotting, mimicking natural fungal anatomy.
Exploding outward from the mouth toward the right side of the canvas is a massive, dynamic wave of energy. Tendrils of orange and red resembling flame dance across a bright yellow background, giving the distinct visual impression that the figure is forcefully breathing out fire.
The original painting is 24" inches wide x 18" inches high, painted on a stretched canvas at my Port Angeles based Luna Gallery studio.
